Gloria Lissner, Founder of Famous Fido Rescue

I have been working with dogs for over forty years. I began in my grooming shop, Happy Tails, by handling hard to groom dogs I have learned their language and understand all dogs are individual with different likes and dislikes. I am able to handle difficult dogs and gain their trust because I respect each animal, listen to their body language to get a feel for what the dog is trying convey to me. Many dogs are misunderstood because sometimes people don’t listen to what the dog is communicating to them.

It takes work a routine and most of all love that forms each bond with a dog and their person.

“Most of the dogs that we rescue from the shelter have behavioral problems, their afraid and been abandoned and left behind. I have not met one dog that I have rescued that hasn’t transformed and found a loving home. There is a place for every dog or cat. We don’t give up on them.

" My belief is there is a special home fore every dog or cat. Its not always easy to find the right person that will do what ever it takes. It takes a lot of time but every dog that has been labeled with behavioral problems that we have rescued has blossomed and found a forever home."

Fran Berry, CPDT-KA

Since the time Fran Berry took her first steps, she had a love of animals. Growing up she had dogs, cats, birds, horses and an assortment of reptiles, so it is no surprise that she ended up working in the animal industry. Early on in her career she worked as a dog groomer, veterinarian assistant and animal radiographer. She also had experience showing and training dogs, but left that endeavor because the dog-training methods used at that time were very harsh. It would take another 20 years and a rowdy rescued pup to discover that positive reinforcement training, was the most rewarding and satisfying way to motivate a dog. Once she started studying animal behavior and training, she was hooked!

Today, Fran owns and operates GofidoGoodFido where she does in-home behavior consultations and behavior modification, educational lectures, teaches group classes at several Chicago facilities and is a mentor-trainer for students enrolled in the Animal Behavior College dog-training program.

Fran has earned her CPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer) through the Certification Council For Professional Dog Trainers. She is a proud member of PPG, a force-free organization, is a Premium Professional Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, and writes articles about dog training and behavior. Her sole mission is to prevent dogs from becoming another shelter-dog statistic by educating pet-parents and providing fun outlets for humans and hounds to enjoy like her Amusement Bark series where dogs and their humans can participate in a variety of learning games and meet other fun dog people!

Currently she shares a home with her rescued animals: Freddie, Fonzie, Felix and Fergus, collectively the F-Troop!

Susan Russel, Volunteer

I’m a lover of all things furred and four-legged, but homeless dogs have a very special place in my heart and my volunteering commitment. Famous Fido has pulled a number of animals from the City shelter who didn’t have a lot of time before their time was up. When these animals go into boarding at Famous Fido, sometimes it can take a long time for them –– especially the pit bull mixes –– to find the right home. Exercising, training and spending time with the dogs is incredibly important to their well being while they wait. I focus on the large dogs because they like to run, and I like to run. So it’s a pretty good deal. I encourage every animal lover who has a couple of hours a week to pick up a leash and spend some time at a rescue.
