Famous Fido Rescue

Famous Fido Rescue and Adoption Alliance is guided by a simple quote by Gandhi: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”

In the late 1970's our founder - Gloria Lissner - saw that there was a problem with millions of animals being euthanize d every year. While many believed that this problem could not be remedied, Gloria began to rescue dogs and cats as an alternative to the violence they would suffer at a kill-shelter.

It is for this reason that our mission is a powerful one: Famous Fido Rescue is a grassroots effort to end kill shelters and to promote animal rescue and adoption - we work to rescue animals who aren't considered “adoptable” from abuse and euthanasia and we work to connect these animals with safe, loving homes. We also strive to educate the community about animal rescue and animal protection.

Gloria Lissner, has been dedicated to Animal Protection and has saved thousands of animals in the last 30 years. The establishment of Famous Fido Rescue is the combined effort of many individuals who are driven and dedicated to finding answers to the many problems that afflict abused dogs and cats - we have made a lot of progress however there is still a very long way to go. Because of the many like-minded people we work with we provide food, shelter, veterinary health-care, spaying, neutering, training, and adoption information - we also offer lots of love, an active support system and many other resources.

We want to change the way people view animals and the way that many laws do not work to protect them. We care about our furry friends and with your help we can change their lives for the better and find a solution to this never-ending problem.

Famous Fido aims to save the lives of the animals that need us most - those at high risk of euthanasia. We rescue and rehabilitate the animals that many other shelters feel they cannot take. No animal, with the chance of a healthy happy life, is declined medical treatment. All are vaccinated, heart-worm tested, micro-chipped and spayed or neutered before they go to their forever homes. We educate people to think of themselves as guardians of their pets, not owners. We encourage understanding that a shelter is not the answer to an unwanted animal. No animal should have to live in a shelter. Re-homing is the best and only answer. We will continue to build a network of foster parents and potential adopters to ensure that these animals are treated with respect and compassion for the rest of their lives.

Joshua Clark wrote. "I can honestly say I'm an animal lover...when that animal is a Koala. As a child I was always afraid of dogs yet I wanted one. Mostly it was because I thought that any dog I had would love me as much as I love it, behave, walk and feed itself, and protect me from whatever monsters were living under the bed at the time. I can honestly admit that before working with Gloria Lissner and Famous Fido Rescue I lacked a genuine appreciation for “Man's Best Friend”. Seeing and hearing the truth of what shelter and stray dogs go through has been somewhat of a life-changing experience. I want to thank all those who participated in the filming of this video and encourage others to get involved in the NO KILL effort in their own city, and if there isn't one start one."
